A Brief History Of Everyone Who Ever Lived
By Adam Rutherford

Intro: A Long Long Lineage
Ancestry is a topic that sparks everybody’s curiosity. Who your ancestors were? Where you're originally from? These questions draw people’s attention because they offer a window into you and your origin. To know your origin and roots is important for history because the past is often what defines you. The present offers opportunities to change that image and the result of actions taken in the present. But how far back does the past still influence you? Does the past of other people also affect you if you are a direct descendant of them? Now these are philosophical questions that are impossible to answer or even to begin answering. Nevertheless, I would argue that to an extent the past of your ancestors influences you.
"We can chart our future clearly and wisely only when we know the path which has led us to the present"
The only reason I would argue this point is because of DNA. Your DNA is your most prized and valuable possession. It extends further than any materialistic possession (I know DNA is a physical thing) you could ever own. It is the result of millions of years of evolution, of countless generations, playing an all or nothing to test DNA’s properties to its limits. Generations protected it with their lives, passing it down and down until it has finally reached you. It is the ultimate asset your lineage has given to the world. YOU! Yet all these years of hardship and toil eventually amount to nothing. That is a key problem that the world as a whole is facing as birth rates decline. This is something countries tend to face as they become more developed and women are pushed to pursue a job, whether they have children or not. With such a dangerous trend, I am interested to see what the future holds for humanity and whether countries will regret valuing economic prosperity over social prosperity.
